Data for Grant Writers Workshop

Overview: The Data for Grant Writers Workshop is geared toward grant writing professionals and individuals interested in learning the basics of using data in grant proposal writing, community analysis, or market research. Presenters will provide information on use of two data sources: the U.S. Census and data available from the Hawaii Health Information Corporation. Participants will learn how to access census demographics and Hawaii healthcare data to help build an effective case for project funding. The Workshop will be conducted at the Pacific Guardian Center’s Conference Center, located at 733 Bishop Street, ground floor.
Major Workshop Topics Include
I. Accessing data on over 40 topics, including age, sex, race/Hispanic Origin, detailed ethnic groupings (such as Native Hawaiian, Filipino),income, poverty, education, language spoken at home, etc.
II. Finding the most current and relevant data
III. Presenting Census or HHIC Data in a Grant Proposal
IV. Understanding Census Data Products as well as those from HHIC

Presenter Bios
Jerry Wong
Over the course of 4 decennial censuses in 36 years of service, Jerry’s experience has been extensive in both the Census Bureau’s missions of collecting and disseminating information. He has worked in management positions during each of the last 4 censuses. Jerry’s data collection experience also includes supervising five of the Bureau’s ongoing health surveys in the Los Angeles Region. For over 20 years of his career, Jerry has served as an Information Services Specialist where he worked with community groups, businesses, elected officials, planners, other organizations and the media and trained thousands of individuals on the use of demographic and economic census data for market research, community analysis and planning, grant proposals, and general decision-making which involves the use of statistical information. He is a frequent speaker on cultural diversity and demographic trends.
Jerry holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from UCLA and a Masters Degree in Social Welfare also from UCLA.
Active in the community, Jerry has held leadership positions and has served on various boards for a number of Asian-American community organizations in the Los Angeles area. Jerry served as a Commissioner for the Los Angeles Unified School District and was an advisor to the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks. He also currently serves on Nielsen’s Asian Pacific American Advisory Council.
Peter Sybinsky
As CEO of the Hawaii Health Information Corporation (HHIC), Dr. Sybinsky leads the policy and operations of HHIC. With the Board of Directors, he establishes and implements strategic goals and actions designed to improve the quality of healthcare in Hawaii by expanding and improving the collection, management and analysis of data.
Prior to joining HHIC, Pete served in a variety of executive roles in Hawaii and on the Mainland spanning a career of more than 35 years in public health, human service programs and healthcare delivery. In addition to his broad executive experience, his background includes direction of a research and evaluation team at a community mental health center, budget analysis and extensive policy research as well as his current responsibilities at HHIC.
An East-West Center grantee, Pete received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii. He currently serves on the Governor’s Health Transformation Council (State of Hawaii) serves as a Board Member of the Hawaii Health Information Exchange, and is an Alumni member of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
